Workshop Summary - January 23, 2016 - Part 2 of 2

This time of year is also the time to make Valentine cards.   So my workshop included a delightful Valentine card using the Picture Perfect stamp set (140520 $27) with 18 photopolymer stamps from the New Occasions catalog.

It is a must have!   Lots of variety and both cards featured in my Part 2 of 2 are from this set.   Check out the hummingbird and starfish.  Inside the Valentine card it says 'You'.    Love it!

Workshop Summary - January 23, 2016 - Part 1 of 2

The January Workshop was so much fun.   Everyone made 8 cards which they could share with family and friends.   6 Birthday Cards and 2 Valentine cards.    Here's the details and please contact me if you need more information.

  • My next workshop is on Saturday, March 12.   I'm taking my Stampin' Up! cards on the road and although it is a leap year month, I could not find a February workshop date.

The first card we made introduced a folded pull out card.   My sincere thanks to Linda Bauwin, my amazing upline Stampin' Up! Demonstrator.   She posted this style of fold on a recent Utube video and made it look easy.   And it was!  This card features the WILDFLOWER FIELDS DESIGNER SERIES PAPER from Sale-A-Bration which is FREE with a $50 order from January 5-March 31, 2016.

  • Stamp Set - What I Love (Sale-A-Bration) and words from Picture Perfect (New Occasions Catalog)
  • Card Stock - Whisper White 2 3/4 x 4 1/4"
  • Blackberry Bliss 4 1/4 x 5 1/2" and 2 3/4 x 2 3/4" and 5 1/4 x 3/4"
  • Old Olive - 4 x 9 3/4"
  • Calyso Coral 4 x 3" (for butterfly)
  • Wildflower Fields Designer Series paper (Sale-A-Bration) 5 x 1/2" and 2 1/2 x 2 1/2"
  • Butterfly Thinlits (137360 $25)
  • Pearl Basic Jewels

Directions to fold and cut card - you need a STAMPIN' TRIMMER (126889 $30); it's clear and exact measurements give you the best cut and score for making this card.  This cards looks complicated to make, but it is so simple.

  • You need a piece of Old Olive card stock that measures 4 x 9 3/4".
  • You will place it on your personal trimmer vertical at the 1" mark.
  • Next you will start cutting at the 3" mark and cut until 7 1/2" mark.
  • FLIP the card stock over and score at the 3" mark until you reach the cut at the 3" mark.
  • Next score at the 5 1/4" mark all the way down the card stock.
  • Then score at the 7 1/2" cut from the cut line to the bottom of the card stock.
  • Bend it like the card photo above and crease the edges with a bone folder.
  • Okay, know decorate with your pre-cut paper pieces.

  • Stamp Sets - What I Love (Sale-A-Bration) and Suite Saying (New Occasions Catalog)
  • Card Stock - Whisper White 5 1/4 x 2 3/4" and 2 x 1 1/2"
  • Pacific Point 5 1/2 x 3" and 2 1/4 x 1 3/4"
  • Tempting Turquoise 5 1/2 x 8 1/2", fold and score at 4 1/4"
  • Ink Colors - Cucumber Crush for leaves; Pool Party, Tempting Turquoise, Pacific Point for flowers
  • Pearl Basic Jewels

Directions:   The stamp set What I Love is a 3-step stamp and is stamped with ink colors starting at the lightest to darkest.   In this example, the color sequence was:  Pool Party, Tempting Turquoise, Pacific Point.  Stamping this 3-step set was very easy...the flowers look their best freely stamped.

Lentil Soup

For some reason, I like Lentil Soup best when the weather gets cold.  It is now cold in Northeast Ohio, so I got out my bag of dried Lentils and made some soup.   I changed the recipe a bit and added extra vegetables I had in my refrigerator .   I added white potato, celery and carrots.   I need another 2 cups of vegetable stock, but it sure did taste good.  The recipe called for chicken stock, but I usually use vegetable stock when the dish will be vegetarian.

Lentil Soup

  • 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. pureed garlic    (when I don't have any, I used 2 tsp. garlic powder)
  • 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups lentils, wahed and drained
  • 5 cups chicken stock, canned broth or water
  • Plain yogurt, for garnish
  • Optional:   about 3/4 cups each potato, celery and/or carrots

Directions:  Melt butter over medium-high heat in a large stockpot or dutch oven.  Salute onions with salt until deep brown, about 10 minutes, reduce heat to low and add garlic, ginger, and pepper.  Cook until aromas are released, stirring constantly, about 2 minutes.   Add lentils and cook an additional 3 minutes.  (I added the vegetables when the lentils were added.)  Constantly stirring so the beans are evenly cooked.   (Sometimes I need to add 1 cup of stock or water to help the cooking process.)

Add chicken stock, bring to a boil, reduce for a simmer, and cook, uncovered about 1 hour, 15 minutes.   Stir soup regularly to ensure even cooking so the beans do not burn.  When done, beans should be soft inside, with no chalkiness.   Serve immediately, garnished with a dollop of yogurt.

Here's a card style that I use to send a small note out which looks more geometric; no flowers or butterflies.   As much as I love the pretty stuff, I need to have a more masculine styled cards too.    I used the Designer Seres Paper GO WILD which is a 6x6" paper stack.  The card stock is one of the new In Colors -  Tip Top Taupe, along with two standards, Whisper White and Basic Black.    I also use the Designer Washi Tape - EVERYDAY CHIC.

  • Go Wild Designer Series Paper Stack (6x6") (138441 $8)
  • Everyday Chic Designer Washi Tape (138385 $8)
  • Card Stock - Basic Back 3x4" and 2x4"
  • Whisper White 2 3/4x3 3/4" and 3x4"
  • Tip Top Taupe 4 1/4 x 11, score at 5 1/2",  cut 1 edge by 2 1/4"
  • Designer Series Paper 3 3/4 x 1 3/4"
  • Circle Punches:  2", 1 3/4", and  1 3/8", 1 1/4", and 1", 3/4"
